fEATHERSTONE
ENTRANCE
This entrance hall from the Featherstone project beautifully merges historical charm with contemporary elegance. The original architectural feature, which was nearly lost before I managed to save it from being repurposed in a pub, now stands as a stunning focal point in the space. When I first visited the Featherstone project, this gem was completely boarded up, concealing its true beauty. Restoring it was a labour of love, knowing that original features like this add unparalleled character to a home.
The grand arched transom with its intricate frosted glass and delicate detailing instantly draws the eye, creating a welcoming statement as you enter the home. This elegant piece serves as a perfect example of how traditional elements can enhance contemporary decor, offering a striking contrast that elevates the entire space.
The blend of modern and classic design continues with the choice of decor: a sleek, minimalistic sideboard topped with a bold ceramic bust and a lush arrangement of greenery adds a touch of modernity, while the soft, warm lighting from the wall sconces and the central chandelier brings a cosy, inviting atmosphere to the hallway. The herringbone wood floors further complement the room's sophisticated aesthetic, adding texture and warmth.
Retaining such original features is crucial because once they're gone, they can't be replaced. They tell a story and add layers of history to a home. I always encourage preserving these elements as they not only honour the past but also provide a unique contrast to modern interiors. The transformation of this space is still a few weeks away from completion, but I’m already anticipating the final reveal, where the blend of old and new will truly shine.
Before
Featherstone Hall is a Georgian property based in Yorkshire, and was already undergoing a major renovation when I was brought onboard to redesign the whole home. The historic property was being gutted.... a little too radically and I arrived just in time to halt some of the skip enthusiasm. The designer is the first person you should hire on any project so we can ensure that all renovation decisions are well considered. Read our blog on the subject.
